KHOTANG: Consumers have been compelled to pay tariffs including penalties for delays in reading electricity meters on time. The service recipients have been forced to pay heavy compensation for not reading the electricity meter for months.

Locals have complained that electricity meters were not read in time in all the ten municipalities of the district. Ramesh Rajbhandari of Anselukharka Bazaar said that the electricity meter reading was done once in five months in Anselukharka Municipality and he was forced to pay high tariffs including compensation.

"Meter readings were done at the same time in five months," he said. The problem is similar in Halesi Tuvachung Municipality. Employees have not come to the municipality for meter readings for four months. Ward Chairman of Halesi Tuvachung Municipality-7, Chayandra Rai, said that they have to pay a high tariff for not reading the meter on time. The problem is similar in Rawabensi, Khotehang, Jantedhunga, Barahpokhari, Diprung Chuichumma, Sakela, Kepilasgadhi, and other municipalities. Diprung Chuichumma Village Municipality Vice-Chairperson Sapna Rai said that they had to pay the tariff including compensation for not reading on time.

Kepilasgadhi Village Municipality Chairman Krishna Kumar Rai said that staff should be deployed in the concerned municipality as there is a problem in paying electricity tariffs from remote places. Lalit Narayan Chaudhary, chief of Nepal Electricity Authority's Diktel Distribution Center, said that meter reading could not be done on time due to the lack of COVID-19 and staff. Chief Chaudhary said that staff would be deployed in Khotang Bazaar of Khotehang Municipality and Halesi of Halesi Tuvachung Municipality to pay the tariff. There are 19,768 household consumers in the district.
