US troops leave Iraq by the end of this year

US President Joe Biden has said US combat troops will leave Iraq by the end of this year.

However, US troops will remain in Iraq to train and advise the Iraqi army.

He made the announcement during the Iraqi Prime Minister's visit to Washington.

Biden made the announcement after talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Khadimi at the White House.

There are currently 2,500 US troops in Iraq.

The troops are said to be helping the Iraqi army fight the remaining Islamic State fighters.

Many US troops will remain in Iraq after the announcement.

Biden's announcement is seen as an act of support for the Iraqi prime minister.

The US presence in Iraq has been a major issue since a US drone strike in Baghdad last year killed a senior Iranian military general, Qasim Suleimani, and a leader of an Iranian-backed Shiite Muslim militia group.

Political parties with ties to Iran are demanding the withdrawal of US-led international forces fighting IS.

However, the threat of IS continues.

The announcement by the US president will be seen as the end of another war that began under President George W. Bush.

He said US troops had withdrawn from Afghanistan earlier this year and that foreign troops had now withdrawn.

Speaking to the Iraqi Prime Minister at the White House, Biden said, "Even as we enter this new phase, our counterterrorism partnership will continue."

"Today, our relationship is stronger than ever. We have a partnership for the economy, the environment, health, education, culture, and more," Khadimi said.

He emphasized that there was no need for foreign troops in Iraq.
