Non-hospital nursing colleges will be allowed to teach

Kathmandu: As per the provisions of the Medical Education Act, the Angik Nursing College, which does not have a 100-bed hospital, will be able to provide education to students with the help of government hospitals.

The Act provides that only colleges with a 100-bed hospital can teach nursing. About 150 nursing colleges that do not meet the criteria, including hospitals, are in a position to admit students at the certificate level and undergraduate level.

According to Shrikrishna Giri, vice-chairman of the commission, the affiliated colleges run with the permission of the University, Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) are ready to allow students to study with the consent of the government hospital. There is no 100-bed facility in all the nursing colleges run by Tribhuvan, Pokhara University, and CTEVT.

The commission has sent a proposal to the Council of Ministers to allow the affiliated college to teach in collaboration with the nearby 100-bed government hospital. As Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba was positive about the proposal, the commission has stated that the quota will be fixed so that such affiliated colleges can start teaching from this academic session. After the proposal is approved by the Council of Ministers, the Commission will give permission for admission by fixing the student quota. The commission had sent the proposal during the KP Sharma Oli-led government.

Despite pressure from private nursing colleges to cooperate with government hospitals, no decision has been reached. Twenty-one nursing colleges, including TRI, Pokhara, Eastern University, and CTEVT, do not have their own 100-bed hospital.
