There are signs of an immediate ceasefire within the CPN-UML. After being embroiled in internal disputes for a long time, the Madhav Nepal faction decided to make maximum efforts for party unity and not to express anti-unity. The standing committee meeting of the Nepali side held in Buddhanagar, Kathmandu on Sunday and Monday has decided to make more efforts for a dignified unity.
At the meeting, the leaders urged party president KP Sharma Oli and senior leader Nepal not to make statements that would disrupt various efforts for unity. "Everyone is unanimous in the meeting about resolving the party's dispute as much as possible. We are of the view that these issues should be resolved within this year. I think the party's dispute will be resolved within this year, 'said Bhim Acharya, who is also the party's secretary. According to him, both sides have urged not to engage in anti-unity activities. The meeting also urged the Oli faction to stop the anarchic activities taking place in the name of fraternal organizations. The meeting has requested to stop the swearing-in by forming squads like Youth Force, People's Volunteers, and Akhil Force.
The meeting has decided to implement the 10-point agreement prepared by the task force formed to resolve the disputes within the party and move ahead with the proposal made by the party chairman Oli with an atmosphere of trust. "Efforts for party unity are largely positive. There is talk of making more efforts to bring these efforts to an end soon. The emphasis of all friends is on unity. Therefore, both the leaders have been urged not to make statements that would jeopardize the unity effort, 'said leader Raghuji Pant after the meeting. "If there is no alternative to party unity, both leaders should restrain their expressions. The statement should not be made to provoke the cadres, 'said Acharya, a member of the standing committee.
On behalf of Oli, it has been proposed to resolve the dispute by giving Madhav Nepal second chairmanship and equal rights. However, senior leader Nepal said that since there is no provision for a second chairperson in the constitution, the dispute will be resolved as per the constitution and the rights of the second chairperson will be discussed in the constitution. "It simply came to our notice then. Leader Nepal insists that there should be unity as per the constitution, 'said a leader close to him.
In Monday's meeting, the Nepali leader had said that he would fight within the party if a respectable issue came up. As the legislature passed by the ninth general convention of the CPN-UML did not envisage a second president, he did not want to go for a second president without amending the Nepali constitution. According to Pant, party unity has been emphasized for the time being as the desire of the party cadres across the country is also unity. "It has been realized that the CPN-UML cadres, voters, and people who love nationalism and democracy want the unity of the CPN-UML, so the party unity should be taken seriously and made successful," Pant said. During the meeting, it was suggested to hold talks between the two top leaders.
During the meeting, Acharya and other leaders said that the party unity process should be completed soon. He stressed the need not to remain a prisoner of indecision. "People and activists are confused. Leaders should think about this, 'Acharya said. While party president Oli's party is silent, the Nepali party is trying to resolve the dispute within a year. According to a source, the meeting has handed over the task to Bhim Rawal.
