Ex-servicemen and Maoist fighters terrorizing with sophisticated weapons

Biratnagar: It has been confirmed that gangs are active in the eastern districts using sophisticated and automatic weapons in an illegal and organized manner.

Police have arrested a gang comprising ex-combatants and ex-servicemen of the Maoists. According to Morang Police Chief SP Janardan GC, six people were arrested along with SMG (machine gun) and pistol as well as bullets and magazines.

According to him, the arrested are Chandra Bahadur Rai, 39, of Sabhapokhari Gaonpalika-4, Sankhuwasabha, Itahari Sub-Metropolis-20, Sunsari, Pramod Chaudhary, 45, of Gadhi Gaonpalika-1, Sunsari and Chiranjivi Rai, 30, of Sankhuwasabha.

Similarly, Mission Rai, 22, of Sundaraharaincha Municipality-5, Morang, Santosh Rai, 31, of Sundaraharaincha-7, and Nagendra Rai, 30, of Paiwadumma Gaonpalika-3 of Bhojpur has also been arrested.

Those arrested from different places in Morang and Sunsari have been made public by the Morang Police by organizing a press conference on Wednesday. Pramod was arrested on Wednesday afternoon and others on Tuesday night, police said.

According to SP GC, the gang had last tried to loot a gold and silver shop in Triveni Tol at 10 Virat Chowk of Morang's Sundaraharaincha Municipality on July 20. According to him, an attempt was made to loot Shiva Panchayat Jewelers run by Khagendra Thapa by terrorizing and terrorizing the people by showing weapons.

The scene is also captured on CCTV footage from a gold and silver shop. According to SP GC, attempts were made to loot the gold and silver shop on the second day as well. He said that seven people were involved in the incident but one was absconding. Stating that the search was continuing, the police did not reveal anything about the people directly involved in the looting attempt. It has been revealed that they came to Itahari at night after the looting attempt was not successful.

A joint team of State Police Office Biratnagar, District Police Office Morang, Area Police Office Belbari, and Police Post Gachhiya led by DSP Manjeel Mukharung of Morang Police had mobilized to arrest those involved in the incident. According to GC, a team led by DSP Mukharung succeeded in arresting the armed group within 12 days of the incident after hard work and strong investigation.

Among those involved in the incident is Chandra Bahadur, a veteran of the Nepal Army's Sherjung Battalion. He resigned from his job in Khotang three years ago, according to police. GC says he led the work in bringing, managing, and hiding the weapons used in the incident. According to him, it is yet to be ascertained from where Rai had brought the weapon 5-6 months ago.

Similarly, it has been revealed that Pramod Chaudhary alias Diamond is a former Maoist fighter. According to the police, he was released from Sunsari only a year and a half ago after serving a prison sentence in the case. According to the police, Pramod was a member of the 7th Brigade.

According to the police, he worked actively as a fighter of the then rebel Maoists from 2057 BS to 2063 BS. It has been revealed that he was shot in the neck in 2060 BS in a double encounter with the security personnel. At that time, he was treated in Farvesgunj, India. According to the police, the party has borne the cost of Rs 500,000 for Pramod's treatment.

Police say that the past of the arrested others is being investigated. According to SP GC, Chandra Bahadur and Pramod had entered the gold and silver shop with weapons during the robbery attempt. According to him, Chandra Bahadur and Pramod had entered the shop carrying a pistol. Police said that the identity of the person who was sitting outside the shop terrorizing the public with a third pistol has yet to be revealed and arrested.

According to the police official, it has been confirmed that the ex-combatants and the army are involved in criminal activities by forming an organized gang in the same group. "A joint gang of ex-servicemen and combatants with criminal backgrounds is involved in a crime with the help of sophisticated weapons," a police source said.

An SMG, its magazine, 62 rounds of ammunition, two pistols with a sharp and automatic pistol, a pistol magazine, two rounds of pistol and four rounds of three-knot three-rifle ammunition, and two communication sets were recovered from the detainees, said SP GC. According to GC, the weapon used in the incident was found hidden in a cartoon inside the trunk of a Karam tree in Namuna Community Forest at Sundaraharaincha-5. According to him, the gang used auto to understand the situation around the incident site after a robbery attempt for fear of being arrested by the police while using a motorcycle.

Police on Wednesday extended the deadline to file charges against the suspects in four counts, including arms smuggling, robbery, murder, and organized crime. Meanwhile, a man was looted and beaten in Kerabari Gaonpalika-10 of Morang on July 20 after attempting to loot a gold and silver shop.

Bhim Bahadur Limbu, 43, of Kerabari-1 was beaten by a group of three or four persons and his mobile phone and Rs 26,500 were looted, according to police. However, it is yet to be ascertained whether the group was involved in the incident, said SP GC.

Similarly, a BB Kiran shop run by Purna Bahadur Magar was burglarized in Kerabari-10 on July 20. Despite the theft of more than Rs 45,000 in cash and various items from the shop, those involved have not been arrested yet. Police suspect that the gang may have been involved in both the recent incidents of looting and theft.

"There are plans to carry out other large-scale criminal activities using sophisticated weapons illegally," said SP GC, "but a criminal gang organized by police activism has been arrested." He informed that the connection of this gang and other contacts are being worked out.
