Haitian President Javonel Moise has been assassinated. President Moise was assassinated at his residence at around 1pm local time on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Claude Joseph said in a statement that the president had been assassinated by an armed group. The motive for the killings was not immediately clear, but the Spanish-speaking group said in a statement.
President Moisey's wife was also shot dead in the attack. Prime Minister Joseph called the incident "disgusting, inhumane and barbaric."
Joseph said all necessary steps would be taken to maintain stability in the country. Moise has been President of Haiti since February 2017. He was accused of corruption. Violent anti-government protests also broke out. Opposition groups called for a boycott of the assembly.
Earlier this year, there were protests in the Haitian capital and other cities demanding the president's resignation. Opposition groups called for the president's term to end on February 7. Moise, on the other hand, said he had not been able to work for one year and needed an additional one-year term.
Moise said earlier this year that he had been assassinated and was being held in Haiti. He had ordered the arrest of 23 people, including a Supreme Court judge and a senior leader, to save his post.
Haiti's long-volatile politics are expected to become more volatile and violent with the assassination of the president.
