Morang: Police on Wednesday arrested six people with short machine guns (SMGs) on a charge of trying to loot Shiva Panchayat Jewelers at 10 Triveni Chowk in Sundaraharaincha Municipality.

Police recovered an SMG and a magazine and 62 rounds of ammunition from him, three rounds of ammunition used in a sharp pistol and a three-knot three rifle and an automatic pistol, a magazine, and two rounds of ammunition.

Among the arrested are Chandra Bahadur Rai, 39, of 20 Tarahara in Itahari sub-metropolitan city, Pramod Chaudhary, 45, Diamond, 45, of Gadhi village in Sunsari and Chiranjivi Rai, 30, of 20 Tarahara in Sankhuwasabha. Mission Rai, 22, of Sundaraharaincha-5, Nagendra Rai, 30, and Santosh Rai, 31, of Sundaraharaincha-7 have been living in Itahari 20 Tarahara, Bhojpur.

Chandra Bahadur and Pramod had tried unsuccessfully to loot Thapa's shop at 1 pm on July 20. "They initially used the recovered auto-rickshaw to spy on the shop and its surroundings two or three days ago," said GC.

Chandra Bahadur had entered the shop carrying SMG, Chaudhary with a sharp pistol, and one person who was yet to be arrested with an automatic pistol. Four others had set up a security cordon outside the shop. After the three entered the gold shop for looting, the shop owner Thapa's wife came out of the house and shouted. After that, the people of Tol started shouting and their looting plan failed. As they were leaving the shop, they tried to fire SMG but fled when there was no fire.

Police were investigating based on CCTV footage of the gold shop. Police said that they have registered a case against them for arms smuggling, robbery, organized crime, and attempted shooting.
